by Mary Nichols

(192 pp. 350 g)

The story of Eliza Ong who was the midwife in the village of Necton through much of the 20th century. Deprived of her education by family circumstances, she developed a talent for nursing which was recognised and relied upon by the local doctors. The story of Eliza and Walter and their family reflects all the great events of the century, two world wars, the depression of the 20s and 30s, the years of austerity after the war. It is nevertheless a cheerful book, Norfolk through and through.
